Norms and Responsibilities

David Kintigh
My high school recently started to embrace the digital world. We went from denying all electronics except hard-wired computers in labs, to issuing Chromebooks to students and using cellphones for educational purposes. I am thankful that we are making the move, but any teaching of digital citizenship has fallen to the teachers and they haven't been given any instructions themselves. This has allowed a wide array of practices to occur as they fight through trial and error.

The digital world is part of our students' world and will only become more so. Just as we teach responsibility and other social skills, in addition to our educational skills, we must teach digital citizenship for students' safety, their educational productivity, and future interaction with the digital world.
