We have had this discussion at our school many times as we are faced with issues of students misusing technology. Whether it is students who are attempting to look up inappropriate content or messaging/e-mail other students when they are supposed to be using the computers for other assignments, we are faced with making decisions about kids' rights to technology. It has become very difficult for students to complete their assignments without technology. We currently have teachers coming up with alternative assignments, but then we question if they are still learning the same material and developing the same skills.
We are working on teaching students how to use technology responsibly both within and outside of the school environment. By spending this time proactively with students, we hope it curbs the number of irresponsible choices students may make.
