As a teacher and a parent of a 14 year old, I have a responsibility to educate my students and son about what it means to be responsible and what rights they have when using technology. I like the analogy that we wouldn't let our kids drive without having driving lessons, so why would we just set our children free to use technology? We need to teach them that they have the right to freedom of expression, privacy, and identity. But also that their rights can be threatened. Many children post personal information without a second thought. They make friends with people they don't even know. They also could come into contact with content that is not appropriate for children their age. They also have digital responsibilities to report bullying, to download music, videos, and other material legally, and need adults to model proper technology use. There is so much that could go wrong when it comes to the digital world that we must take big steps to educate our children to give them the knowledge to help them keep themselves safe and make good choices while using technology.
