Norms and Responsiblities. Linda Manley

Linda Manley
What user rights do you feel should be part of the norms in this digital world?  What user responsibilities do you feel should be expressed in this digital world?  Digital users should expect the rights of privacy of their personal information, the ownership of created materials, and the freedom of expression without being offensive as in attacking a person or group. Some material is going to offend within the realm of different opinions, ideas and cultures, but users always have the right of choice. Turn it off, leave the site, but no one should have the "right" to shut down another user who is working within current law. Once opinions become the basis for censorship no one is safe.
The responsibilities of users fall mainly in the realm of respect. Expect and respect that there will be opinions, ideas, and material that you disagree with or do not like. Respect the privacy of others and protect your own. Practice Upstanding in response to cyberbullying. If you must respond, do so respectfully and directly. Do not fall into the trap of an argument. All have the choice to leave or shut down. Respect the user rights of material created by others. Be aware of user guides and copyright. Teach children all of these things and practice scenarios of what they may encounter. Teach them which adults are safe to turn to. Teach them to be forward thinkers - if this, then what may happen? First do no harm.

I do also agree with this. Parents should let them no not to scare them but let them know what they have to be aware of when using digital technology. That if something was to happen to go to the parent or trusted adult to help them so they are not dealing with it themselves.
