As several have stated, norms and responsibilities in a digital age should exemplify the basic freedoms of US democracy. At the same time, the need for certain controls for interaction in cyberspace and in 1-to-1 environments is evident. It is far easier to attack someone from the dark areas of cyberspace. Teaching self-control, morality, empathy, and fairness are all necessary, but open-ended student access to the web needs to be limited so that individuals are safe and practice their freedoms without limiting others'. Currently, however, I have seen nothing technologically that will allow as much control as is sometimes needed to protect students and prevent others from doing what they should not.
