Norms and responsibilities

Steven D Williams
As we test the norms and responsibilities of the internet, I believe we should be very careful to maintain the freedom and liberty of the population to not be spied on by their government or their private companies.  I believe that sites collecting information on their customers should be required by law to have full confirmed approval from every customer or they should be treated the same under the law as our laws would if someone was spying on people in their homes in the flesh.

Steven, that is an interesting take on spyware. More and more we have various companies that use search history and cookies from visited sites to "customize" your experience on the web, from the ads you see in the margins to the types of sites that pop-up on your web searches. I am sure that many people enjoy the customized experience, but that always comes at a price, and that is your freedom and privacy. Do you see the people responsible for enforcing such laws to be government based or a third party without a vested interest? That is a difficult road to travel, as we have seen in recent scandals how the government has been mired in the privacy violations themselves.
