I believe the internet is no different than the way we interpret our other rights as citizens. Our rights extend to the point at which they interfere with someone else's rights. All citizens should have the right to easy, affordable access to online content, the right to express viewpoints, purchase goods, monitor banking, etc... The things we view as inappropriate use of the internet occur when people stretch their own rights to the point that they interfere with someone else's rights such as privacy, safety, reliable information, ownership of authentic works etc...Most students do not have the critical thinking ability to recognize these boundaries on their own. They must be taught it and constantly reminded. Digital citizenship should be a discussion in our classrooms every time we grant students access to technology.
