I feel digital media actually can give us an advantage if we use it wisely. In face to face conversations we sometimes say something we wish we could take back. In the digital world, we can write something and wait to send or post it. We can consider the consequences of what we say. If we have considered how our message will be received and are content with it, we can go ahead. If not, such as writing something in anger, we can have the benefit of time to cool down and reconsider our response.
I agree with many posts that we need to make sure students understand that whatever they put out there is forever. And it may be posted by someone else without our knowledge.
