I hear from students, with increasing frequency, that it's their "right" to be able to post whatever they want online. They cite freedom of speech...until they are personally affected by someone else's "freedom of speech". It's very frustrating to deal with all of the problems that could have been avoided had students thought through everything they were saying, and sharing, online. So many of the personal issues that cause students to be distracted and unable to learn to their full potential have nothing to do with things that are actually taking place during school...it's the things that were posted and commented on, tweeted and retweeted, outside of the school day, that have a lasting impact. Students are entirely too brave when they are hiding behind their computers, iPads, phones etc. They seem to feel as though they are not in the least bit responsible for how they impact others. Trying to convince them otherwise is a never-ending task.
