Norms and responsibilities

Denise Rhodes
In my opinion rights of children should be limited in the digital world.  Children have to first get their learning permit to drive.  They also have restrictions on their driver's license.  It is up to the parents, teachers, and other responsible adults to educate as well as monitor the interactions that children have with technology and the internet.  I understand that there are many advantages and educational uses for internet access by children.  Again, it is a responsibility of teachers and parents to monitor and educate children on respecting others, cyber criminals and predators, protecting their privacy, and manners.  I find it ironic that people throw a fit about children watching the Disney movie "Bambi" because of the violent nature but it seems to be ok for 4th Graders to have a Twitter account and Google search so many things often without a teacher standing over their shoulder.  We have movie ratings:  G, PG, PG-13, R and this is so we can be informed about the content of the movie.  We can choose what our children see.  So since the digital world is rated E.....for everyone it is our responsibility as adults to teach our children right from wrong when using technology. We must do our best to keep them safe from harm by continually communicating and educating them.
