Having worked with students for a number of years with educational laptops at school, it has become evident that citizenship & responsibilities need to be learned at a much younger age than many realize. In the elementary grades of 3rd and 4th, students are online every second available. Digital online activity is their “normal” life. But at that age, they do not recognize that safety issues exist, or that they have the responsibility for responsible action. And if their online behavior becomes a habit before understanding the long term effects of things they might say or do, then it can become increasing harmful and dangerous. As educators, we need to help students learn the positive aspects of online activity, but also their responsibilities, consequences, expectations.
