Norms and responsibilties

Students should all be taught what their rights and responsibilities are before giving access to technology. So many kids and young adults do not understand the consequences of using technology until after it is too late. They need to understand the importance of being safe and not giving out information that could come back and haunt them for the rest of their lives. As a parent of an 11 year old with a digital tool, It is my responsibility to teach him how to be safe when using his phone. It is definitely a scary world we live in and the more you can teach up front before they are even allowed digital access, the better off they will be.

I appreciate that you are going through the safety procedures with your 11 year old.  I think that is not the norm, however, and as we talk about not giving our children the keys to drive before they have gotten a license, I think we parents need to acknowledge that oftentimes that is exactly what we are doing with giving them technology before proper instruction and precautions.
