Preassessing student science knowledge

neesk@gilbert.k12.ia.us
In order to preassess student knowledge, I like to do a version of a KWL chart. First, I ask kids to write down what they are confident they know about a topic. We are currently in our Physical Science unit in 3rd grade and some of the responses I got this year include "Gravity holds us down" and "Magnets have a positive and negative". Then, I put them with a partner and make them explain how they know what they know. If they aren't sure how they know, then I ask them to move that idea to their "W", or their Want to Know More About column. It allows me to figure out some of the misconceptions that are currently happening in my room, and also it helps guide some of our discussions throughout the unit.
