Working with elementary students I plan on using deeper questioning strategies such as: tell me more, explain your thinking, and where have you seen/heard that before. Taking the time to do so before a lesson will allow me the opportunity to find and address misconceptions before the lesson begins. I think it's an important opportunity to see what they are thinking versus having them repeat back the answers you are looking for. I watched the PBIS video and could relate to young students who appeared to grasp a concept, but in reality, were thinking something completely different. Another strategy I would like to implement is think-pair-share. I would have students partner up and share their thinking with a peer. As they are talking to one another, I can take the opportunity to listen in to what students know already in a whole group setting.
