Privacy Settings: Facebook

hoobieschott

I looked at Facebook, in part because I have it and in part because I wanted to review my privacy.  I’ve done this before, but as the privacy policies update occasionally, it seemed worth it.

The thing that I found most interesting is the ability to now limit who can see one’s past posts.  This might be especially useful to younger professionals who, for example,  posted a lot during college, but don’t want those old posts widely available now.  It’s a pretty easy privacy setting to get to.

The other thing that strikes me is that a person could spend a lot of time working on or worrying about this.  I don’t have that kind of time.  So, I just set everything to be as restrictive as possible: Only friends can see me timeline, I review everything that goes on my timeline, only my friends can look up my information, search engines aren’t allowed to crawl my page, and so on.

I also looked at my profile as it looks to the general public.  That was interesting.  I found that my brother was listed as my brother and able to be seen, so I had to look up how to change that.  I know that some people finder websites include possible relatives and that this can be a clue for identifying the right person or lead to information about me, if someone were to look at his profile.  (Of course, they could also just look him up if they wanted to….)

The thing is - and this relates to my earlier post about digital privacy - that there are so many settings, and the possibility of someone working around those settings as mentioned in the case with my brother, that it is tedious and frustrating to try to figure them out.  This, I think, can lead to fatigue and a de-prioritizing of the importance of privacy.
