Readings from Assignment 3

Haley VanBlaricome
While reading the article that explain the benefits of art I was able to relate to a lot of what was said. In my classroom it can be difficult to incorporate art because there is so much pressure with standardized testing. I am rarely doing a craft or any type of art because the curriculum doesn’t allow time. The article stated a lot of good points especially how we are hindering those students that could excel if they were able to express themselves using art. It is unfortunate how we are setting students up to fail with testing. I don’t believe testing will go away but hopefully it can be changed in the future so students are best able to show their knowledge.

I found it very interesting how the IAA worked. I have never heard of a school like this before, as a teacher I feel it would be intimidating. I personally don’t feel art is a strong subject area of mine, which then makes it difficult to teach art. I try to do a guided drawing once a week and I enjoy seeing the variety in the drawings. I try to relate to students especially those who don’t feel confident in art. I think students would benefit if our country had more schools that integrate art into the everyday curriculum.

It was very interesting to read how teachers and artists collaborated. They seemed to make the lessons engaging for all students. Students seemed to like the art lessons compared to the more traditional ways. As a teacher this makes me think of making sure students are engaged in the lessons and that there can be a good balance of lessons.

I agree with you Haley.  Standardized test preparation takes so much time out of our days it is difficult to get that information in, non the less sticking some fun crafts in to reinforce the topic.  I think it would be great if there was a new education opportunity for an Educator Art Integration specialist.  Sounds fun!
