Readings from Assignment 3

From reading these three articles, my main take-away would be that I need to find ways to integrate the Arts more in my teaching. I believe that it will engage my students more in the learning, and ultimately raise their mastery/understanding of the concepts being taught. With my current 5th grade level team I plan writing and science, so I feel confident that I can find ways to incorporate the Arts into both subject areas. I would likely feel more comfortable incorporating visual arts, but would like to try other Art forms as well.

Of the three articles, the one I felt offered the least useful information was the first. It felt like an opinion piece, that gave me little supporting evidence. The second article was easier to read and more informative. But with data from just two schools, it didn't feel as relevant or applicable to my teaching. Although long, I appreciated the numerical data from the third article. Sample of students was small, but spanned many grade levels and included multiple abilities. It would be interesting to see this research in a broader setting.

I am just getting oriented to lead this course. I am a former K6 art teacher, then art educator at college level for over 20years, and now back in the inner city teaching K8 art! There are a couple of things that you can think about to include the arts into your classroom. First the richness of visuals helps many children. For example, we have an elective course at the end of each day where teachers can teach anything they like. I am reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island to 3rd and 4th graders. Last week they asked why they were going to use a ship to find the treasure! I put together a PowerPoint showing what islands look like and tall mast ships! Then they understood. Visuals and direct observation are wonderful tools for science class. When you get to the art lesson plan, think of an open-ended problem for children to explore visually. I would hope that your art teacher would give you pointers – but you have me!
