Readings from Assignment #3

Kristin Kalcevich
I most closely connected with the quote “Art is not extra, it’s integral.” Incorporating the arts into the curriculum allows children to grow in their ability to make judgements, think analytically, and accept and persevere through challenges. I also appreciated the quote “Absence of art encourages standardization… Allowing for multiple perspectives early in education helps promote understanding and acceptance of others while also helping to create a desire to learn.” Art is open ended—so much of it is dependent of personal experience and interpretation. Because of this, it is a pathway to encourage deeper thinking, the sharing of different perspectives, and communicating individual ideas.

It is a way to encourage differentiation and choice, which are both vital to student engagement. By offering activities and lessons that either incorporate art/music/drama into the content or by allowing students to use those mediums to express their learning, I will be able to better reach the individual interests and learning styles of all my students. As a teacher of very young children, the idea that art is a method of communication that can be more effective than words for early readers and writers really resonated with me; using visual arts, music, or drama as ways to express ideas will allow the youngest children to be released from the limits that words may confine them to.
