Reflection on 3 articles

Megan Boock
As I read these articles, a few things kept going through my mind. I am a homeschooling parent, so we do not take standardized tests. Many of the reasons that art has been removed from the public school classroom is because teachers are choosing to spend more time on the tested subjects. But, I don't have to do that. So, why do I currently have art in my lesson book for only 20 min every third day? Do I also see art as secondary to the other subjects? My kids love art! They choose art during their free time! Just as these articles explained, kids learn better through art. They can express themselves, they are more engaged, behavior issues decrease during these times, and their learning "sticks" better. So, I will still have direct instruction about art as my schedule is written, but my new goal is to integrate art into two lessons a day. Paint the letters or sight words they are learning, draw the animal we just learned about in it's habitat, use stamp/dabbers during math, use pictures for kids to look at then write a story, etc. It doesn't have to be "more work" in planning, just different than what I've been doing. It will definitely be more fun for all of us and I'm excited to see the positive changes too!

You are correct Megan, it isn't more work, it's just different and will take time to integrate art into our lessons.
