While reading the articles I remember back throughout the years various art projects I had seen in the classrooms as a paraeducator. So many of the in-class educational art project just didn’t seem fun and the students weren’t engaged. The in-class art projects were teacher lead and mostly consisted of making book markers or study notes. The teacher told me she didn’t even want to do the projects and was only doing them because she was forced to. Her classes were very boring and the same thing every year. She taught from the Basel books and didn’t deviate from them at all.
If only that teacher had read these articles them maybe she would have tried to do more and make her teaching more engaging. The articles make sense. The senses you can use the more a student will be able to engage and remember what they are being taught. The more we can do to get the students engaged the in what they are learning the better chance the students will learn and remember lesson.
During my student teaching. I had my student break off into groups and they created a country, held elections for the country, created an economy for their country. My students had to work together. They had to communicate, create a poster, and present their countries. Every student had a part in the project. The students were engaged, and I hope this was a project they will always remember.
Art is important to education just as much as any sport. Art can bring another connection for students to bring and understanding and remember what they have learned. Schools and teachers need to make sure they are including art projects that are fun and educational
