Rights and Responsibilities

I am an elementary guidance counselor and spend a fair amount of time teaching digital citizenship.  I feel like kids have the technology at their finger tips and know how to use it, but don't necessarily have the maturity or common sense to use it wisely yet.  I like to tell kids things like "treat others the way they want to be treated" and "don't post or say things that you wouldn't want your grandma to see" are good rules of thumb when considering your rights and responsibilities online.  They also need to know that they have the right to keep themselves safe and the responsibility to use tech wisely because they are being trusted with the device by parents, school, etc.  Kids often act impulsively, and that coupled with kids who may be living in vulnerable situations allows for kids to be taken advantage of.

I agree with a lot of your points. Especially that kids often act impulsively. They do not fully grasp that this information is apart of their digital footprint and we as educators have to give them as much information as possible to help their digital footprint to be a good one. That is one thing I try to instill in all of my students as frequently as I can.
