I believe users should have a right to privacy and the protection of personal information online. They should have the right to express themselves freely and to be able to conduct business, communication, and research safely online. We hear of governments in other countries censoring speech and news outlets in order to better control the thoughts of their citizens. We hear of governments not enforcing laws against identity theft. As users, I believe these things should not be.
With rights come responsibilities, and as users, we have responsibilities to use our speech in ways that are true, helpful, thoughtful, and respectful. We know that the digital world is not always safe, so we also have responsibilities to maintain our personal information in a way that is secure. We should not engage in illegal activities that break copyright laws or include plagiarism. We should conduct business in ways that are beneficial and fair to all parties involved.
