Rights and Responsibilities

Andrea McBeth
I feel it is very difficult to "convince" students that there are "rights" that they do not have as citizens.  High School students believe they have "rights" to basically do whatever they want.  They have been told that their records will be expunged when they turn 18 and that they can do whatever they want.  This being said, they need to understand that their rights have limits when it comes to digital citizenship.  Their school's policy must be followed.  Personally, I really like the two rights mentioned above;  right to privacy and freedom of speech.  With these in mind, they need to understand that they should protect the privacy of others as they would like their privacy protected.  They believe they have freedom of speech, however, they really need to "think" before they "click".  It is very important that these rights and responsibilities begin to be discussed at a very young age.  If we begin in high school, their habits have already been established and it would be very difficult to reach all high schoolers.  They need to act responsibly and only post things they would not mind being posted if it was being said about them.  Being employed in a high school, this is a major problem.  Everything to them is "funny" in their eyes and they have a difficult time seeing the seriousness of this until it happens to them.  Easy to "teach", very difficult to get those issues to "stick in their hearts".
