Rights and responsibilities

Jo Ann Eason
The best statement I have ever heard about technology was, "We,  the teachers, are the technology immigrants, and the students are the technology natives.  Many of them have had technology in their life for almost as long as they have been alive.  We, on the other hand, are struggling to keep up with their knowledge of technology while teaching them how to use technology.  As a lower level elementary teacher, I use the think aloud a lot.  When we research something on-line, I always read it to them then ask, "Is this true/correct?"  They of course think it is because it is on the internet.  I then share with them sites that I know have misinformation and use the same think aloud.  At this time the students aren't using social media, but I tie in the social media sites to show them that this can also be misinformation.  We try to think, "Is this true?  Did anyone need to know this?  Was this hurtful to anyone?"  Practicing think alouds is my way of trying to get students to have those thoughts pop into their heads automatically before using the info or sharing then info.
