In settings, go to Privacy and Safety
For students, I would suggest the following...
Photo Tagging - Only allow people I follow to tag me in photos
Tweet Privacy - Protect my tweets - if you don't want the world to read your tweets
Tweet Location - uncheck Add location to my Tweets
Discoverability - uncheck both Let others find me by email and phone number
Direct Message - uncheck Receive direct messages from anyone
Safety
Uncheck Display media that may contain sensitive content
