Science Reflection

Melodean Montaque
What do you remember most about the Science instruction you had? I remember that Science Instruction was one of my favorite subjects. I loved to learn about the things in my environment, how things worked and how to replicate nature. The instructors were always lively and knowledgeable.

What do you remember fondly? I do not remember much science activities in elementary school, but I fondly recall changing the color of flowers by placing it in water with dye of different colors. I also remember the science experiments that I did in high school. I found delight in testing foods for various substances such as starch and examining the insides of creatures. I think such things had influenced me in wanting to study medicine earlier in life but later I changed my choice to teaching.

What do you recall that were less than enjoyable? I found that the labs were often inadequate resulting in some students becoming mere observers rather than having the hands-on experience. Also, majority of the science lessons were through textbook only therefore we did not experience it rather we had to use our imagination.

What impact has this had on your own teaching? I find pleasure in teaching science and do my best to may it enjoyable for students. When teaching any topic in science I endeavor to make the lesson as practical and hands-on as possible.
