Share a time when you or someone you know was the recipient of an inappropriate use of digital media or when you might have used digital media in an inappropriate manner. How did this make you or others feel? What might have been done differently?

   When my nephew was in junior high he was being bullied and threatened with physical violence by a fellow student who became angry over a comment my nephew made on social media. The boy did physically attack my nephew at school, but told the teacher it was just an accident. My nephew did not tell his parents, but someone who saw the threatening posts forwarded them to the school principal. The principal contacted my sister and her husband and told them about the threats and the incident at school that they now knew was not an accident. The principal told them that they could contact the police and have the boy charged with assault. They settled the matter without involving the police, but what if this information had not been shared with the school principal or she had not taken action?
This made me realize that cyber bullying is much more common than I thought. My nephew was a very typical student, who never had any issues with other students. Just a simple comment made on social media led to a very dangerous situation. I also realized how difficult it is to know or control what students share and how they are treated by others on social media.. My nephew should have shared this information with his parents and teachers. We need to teach young people how to deal with cyber bullying and find ways to stop it when it occurs.
