I have set up a Pinterest account for the sole use of my 4th grade class. As a California teacher, I teach a project-based unit on the CA Mission System. Students are charged with the responsibility to build the "22nd Mission." (
http://www.4cke.com/the-22nd-california-mission.html) Students have to do research about the history of California, the mission system, the founder Fr. Junipero Serra, and the regional resources. There is a lot of controversy on the subject, especially involving the impact on the native peoples by the Catholic friars and missionaries. I have to protect my students from inappropriate content while still offering the various points of view from each stakeholder. For this reason, we use the class Pinterest account. We have several boards that students can access to share research, photos, maps and timelines. I set the security settings to close the group to others. The profile is hidden from search engines. I denied "Picked for You Pins" to avoid inappropriate pop-ups. The site is disconnected from other social media sites. With these settings, I have optimized the chances for safe navigation of the site and shared storage of information.
