Two points to help with online security in Facebook or twitter are first not to just friend anyone and everyone; secondly don't post anything you don't want the world to know. Sorry I don't trust security setting blindly thinking that if I put a lot of personal information up on facebook that ONLY my friends can access it. Your account can be hacked and once you put that information on a server owned by some company out there - they will ALWAYS have a copy of that information whether you want them to or not.
