I am familiar with the security settings on most of the social media sites (at least all of the ones that I use). My Facebook is very strict with it's settings - nonfriends can only see my profile/cover photo and a couple of public posts about political issues I've made.
One thing I think others don't realize is that you can restrict what others post about you on Facebook and tag you in - often others just have to accept that they are tagged or that the information is showing up on their timeline.
