The only social media I have is Facebook and I rarely use it anymore because I did have so many problems with friend requests that were not from me sent to my family and friends. I shut down that page and created a new one, but only look at it occasionally. I double checked my privacy settings. My personal info is set to be viewed by only me. My other settings are for friends only. I came across something called Identity Confirmation. "You might be asked to provide proof of identity if you want to run ads about social media issues, elections or politics." Definitely not anything I'd be interested in, so I did not set that up. Another item I came across was to deny search engines outside of Facebook to link to my profile. I feel safer just not using the app very much. I don't post pictures anymore. Once in a while I'll put out a message that needs a wide audience - usually about an upcoming event. Something I do subscribe to is our family messenger page. It's only for my extended family and it helps keep us up to date with what's going on. Again, I rarely post but am glad to see what is posted by others.
