I recently opened a Gmail account for another course, so I researched Google+, including an extremely informative article at
https://www.lifewire.com/google-security-privacy-and-safety-2487715. It’s amazing -- although not surprising -- the amount of info that is shared with the entire world by default. Conversely, I’m sure that if you were to turn off everything they recommend in the interest of maximizing your privacy and safety, it would be much more challenging to find people who want to be a part of your circle or bring you into theirs. That’s a perfect example of why I have no social media accounts and don’t want any. In particular, everyone should be aware of the warning in the last sentence of the above mentioned article: “You should check the "Profile and Privacy" section of your Google+ account every month or so to make sure that you haven't been opted-in to something you would have rather been opted-out of.”
