Taryn, I agree that science is more than learning the state science standards.  Learning the engineering process is important.  As students work with a group or a partner then need to learn to communicate and work with others in a productive manner.  As students are working together, the students thought process and reflecting on the task is crucial.  It is awesome to watch students make changes to an experiment or a project because it didn't work.  Changing a variable and making a tweek here or there and watching the students engage in their conversations and listening to their "whys."  This is why I teach!!

I agree with your statement. The claim you made about students using these skills in their daily lives is great. Isn't that what we all want as teachers?
