I thought I new this content but by assessment score says differently. I failed, I received a 11/20. The questions were similar but different. I found myself reading the questions a couple times and then crossing out ones that I new weren't a good selection and then saying, "I think it is this one." I don't think this is easy to teach. I remember 45 years ago or more that my teachers would just say to us in ALL grade levels. I am not teaching evolution; "I am not going there."
I will need a lot of review with this concept prior to teaching it to students. I think that using a model of a cladogram could be helpful for this concept; at least get the kids headed in the correct direction. This can help students see what traits all organisms share etc.
