What are some commonalities in the articles and presentation? In what was read and seen, they all shared the importance of students recording their science information in a contained book to share what is learned, answer questions that were posed, work at their abilities, and to use it as a thinking and reference tool. The science notebook is used as a reference tool. The students can go back and see what they have learned and use it as a tool in science.
Are you currently using notebook? How are you using the notebooks? I do use a science notebook, but after reading and listening to the science notebook information I am only using the notebooks as a conceptual tool. Students take notes about the content or question that I pose, place diagrams in the notebook, and draw models and graphs.
Two new things you have learned that reinforce what you are already using. I do use a notebook, like I stated. We do not have science textbooks to read reference. I use the notebooks to share factual information with the students so they can reference the material when we do a lab, a demonstration, an activity, or a worksheet. The students use their notebook as a textbook. I do pose questions to the students and they write their response and then use that to have small discussion and they write down any more information in their notebook that was gained by talking to their peers. We then share as a whole class and write down any other gained information into the notebook. Students do place charts and graphs in their science notebook when we do a lab. They utilize this as a reference document.
Are there any advantages/disadvantages you see in using a science notebook? I have gained a lot of information from this module. I will be researching this topic much more because I will be using science notebooks in my classroom "correctly" so students can gain more information. The advantages to using a science notebook to capture evidence and record student information, make claims and support their claims on a question, and to make notes on content and explain with the students thoughts and using diagrams integral part to learning science.
What way do you see science notebooks help support what we have learned about How Students Learn Science? So far, the science notebooks can help support our ELL students (second language learners), our Special Education students, and ALL learners and their different modes of learning. After reading this module, I am inspired to use them differently than the way I am currently using them. These will help all students in learning, reflecting, and sharing their thoughts with others in their OWN notes in the science notebook.
