In the past my literacy students became interested when I shared about the great sled race that takes place across Alaska in early March. A lot of literature gives Iowa middle schools knowledge about other peoples in other places who suffer the cold along with them - London's To Build a Fire, George's Julie of the Wolves - as examples.
Alaska Dispatch News, adn.com/iditarod reminds that this year's race beings March 5th.
