I feel that all schools should have a policy about the use of social media and digital communication by students. The tough part of it is, what if what you post is done outside of school, but it has effects and consequences in school. So much texting, tweeting, posting, etc. happens between students, is shared, forwarded, etc. to others and ends up being seen by someone (or many others) for whom it was not intended.
Students must be made aware of the consequences of 'checking in' every time they go somewhere--now everyone knows where they are. If they tell everyone when they are on vacation, it is like an invitation to go to their house when no one is home. If students send pictures or private information to one another, the likelihood of other people viewing that content is pretty high.
Pictures on Snap Chat can be saved, your ex-boyfriend might post that topless photo of you on Facebook out of spite, that scathing e-mail text about someone in your class may get forwarded to him, you can't have secrets when you make everything you do public.
Students just need to use common sense--perhaps just stopping to ask themselves, "Would I be okay with it if my parents saw what I am about to send, text, or post?" If the answer is no, don't do it.
Getting into copyright laws and ownership is another whole topic of discussion.
