I am a special education teacher, so I find my G-mail account useful for regular parental contact. I use group e-mails to schedule IEPs. This is very useful, especially when you have a large group to coordinate.
I also use labels to sort my e-mails by student, which helps greatly with my organization.
I am also interested in trying the "Translate" feature, which would simplify my communication with our non-english speaking families.
