I teach upper elementary aged students and communicate with them using Gmail. I use Gmail to clarify homework expectations and remind students of deadlines for our classroom assignments. Gmail and Google are becoming strong tools for teachers to use on a daily basis. At my school, each student has a Gmail address and that Gmail is linked to their Chromebook account and to my Google classroom. This has assisted me in distance learning and helped students communicate with me better when not in school. In a nutshell, communication has increased and confusion has decreased.
I was pleased to learn new ways to help organize my inbox. It has been a mess since the Covid-19 break. I have used the star option to keep "current" issues at my attention in my inbox. What I really benefitted from was learning to set up labels to separate emails for "team meetings", "inservice", "school procedures", etc. I also set up a folder for just teacher-parent communication. Keeping things organized in my Gmail will help me be more productive.
I like the idea of having pen pals and having students write to one another either using Gmail or Google hangouts. It will challenge them to communicate effectively and become more detailed in their writing.
Students could potentially discuss projects, hobbies, and collaborate to complete certain assignments.
