Gmail is useful in the classroom to stay organized in how you archive communication with students. You can create labels for each student and cross-label with alphabetical sections, class sections, or other needs. It will be easy to go back and find the communication you need.
As a language teacher I think using the translation lab could be a dangerous idea!
