Using gmail in the classroom

I am a librarian and I can see several ways to use gmail. I would like to create emails to let students know about new books available in the library as well as links to our card catalog, ebook web site and other resources. I could eventually sub divide the student groups and send grade level specific information. I would also like to add emails to our library automation system to send out overdue reminders but haven't done this yet as not all students have a gmail account at this time.  I do use and like chat for those quick questions to coworkers but have not used it with students.
