What We Call Misconceptions

Terri
The article was very interesting. The three things I learned were:
1. Instead of correcting a student's misconception, expand on the student's misconception.
2. I learned all about the strategies used to help students realize their misconceptions. I thought the modeling out loud and the student conversations were very interesting.
3. Students misconceptions give the teacher an opportunity to teach students science reasoning.

If a teacher does pre-assessing before a lesson, then they can use the strategies from Figure 1 to help students work through their misconceptions. It gives the teacher an opportunity. It also allows the teacher to understand where each student is coming from.

I had a student tell me the oceans were salty from all the animal's sweating. I'm pretty sure this misconception came from social media.

In my own classroom, I will embrace misconceptions instead of just correcting them and moving on.
