What is a Liver Function Test and Why is it Important?

redcliffelabs
Hi everyone,

I wanted to share some information about the Liver Function Test (LFT) and why it is important for our health.

A Liver Function Test is a blood test that helps check how well your liver is working. It measures different enzymes, proteins, and substances in your blood, like ALT, AST, bilirubin, and albumin. These levels can tell your doctor if your liver is healthy or if there is damage or inflammation.

Why is it done?

To check for liver diseases like hepatitis or fatty liver

To monitor liver function before starting certain medicines

To investigate symptoms like fatigue, jaundice, or abdominal pain

To track liver health in people with chronic conditions

How is it done?
It’s a simple blood test. You may be asked to fast for a few hours before the test. A small blood sample is taken and analyzed in a lab.

Benefits:

Early detection of liver problems

Helps in planning treatment and lifestyle changes

Provides important information for overall health checkups
