Birdie started in the United States during the early 1900s. It was derived from the slang term, bird, which referred to something wonderful. One golfer used the term Birdie after one under par score during a game in Atlantic City, calling the shot a bird of a shot and the name has remained. It has since come to be a universal term as far as one-under-par performances in golf are concerned.
