This is a personal experience during my 1st year as a permanent substitute teacher. I was a teacher in a middle school teaching junior high Family and Consumer Science class. There were 2 boys who were a big challenge. One day, I was correcting the male student for not obeying class rules and following expectations. The next day, the assistant principal called me to the office. He told me that another female student had seen a video of the interaction between the male student and me during the correction interaction. The female student reported the video right away to the principal. I had no idea this occurred. I was very upset, and the student received an out-of-school suspension. When the principal asked why the student had done this, he replied," Because I did not want to listen to what she was saying and thought it would be funny to do this to her." This experience was an eye-opener and can be used as an example of digital citizenship. The female student practiced digital citizenship by using responsibility and accountability. Like the video in the modules on cyberbullying, she did something positive from an experience that affected another person. Digital media is out there, and students have access to it all the time.
