I loved using gmail with parents and students. It was fast and convenient, but I will say that if it was of a sensitive nature, I found that calling was still the best option. Sometimes, parents become defensive or write things they would not say in person/or over the phone. I also liked having the option to see if the student or parent opened the email. I can easily remind students or parents of a test coming up, an overdue assignment, etc.
