I sadly know a student that was a huge gamer and very succesfuly with his games so he made a lot of friends online and was very safe about not providing any personal infomation yet ended up befriending someone online who decided to take too much interest in him. After some time (over a year), this person was able to get this student to chat in private chats and disucss his personal life (goals, struggles with famiy, girls) and slowly drove a wedge between this student and his family/friends. People can be very manipulative. Thankfully, the parent did find out what happened and involved the police and put a stop to all of the inapporprate chats. What this student did was allow a private chat to happen and continue to happen. We as teachers and parents need to stress how private chats are not safe and if you are going to chat it should be in chat room that are monitored as well as why it is important to keep private information off the internet.
