I used to belong to a forum for wives and mothers, where people shared recipes, parenting stories, and craft ideas. It became apparent that some within the community developed an alternate forum where members could use sock puppets to mock each other. This prompted people within the original community to feel self-conscious and question the character of the others they were chatting with. It was a shame that people's feelings got hurt, but if you view the situation practically, it was a good lesson for some people who were oversharing on the internet (where anyone can read your words). Ideally there would be no cruelty online, and we can work toward that. But realistically we must prepare students for how to deal with trolls (ignore, move on).
