norms and responsibilities

Ryan Osbourne
I think our digital world rights and norms should include a right to privacy, a right to safety, and a right to free speech.  I also believe that online transparency needs to be addressed as many sites/apps confuse and manipulate through user agreements and terms/conditions.  As with most newer technologies, society is having to figure out adaptations and rules/laws as we go to better use and safeguard the online community.

I believe users have certain responsibilities as well.  Namely, they should maintain the privacy of others, restrict themselves from and be responsible for untruths and slander, and work to maintain an ethical standard in general terms (businesses, personally, etc).  Students need to be taught the massive responsibility that comes with an online presence.  As the digital world has now become entrenched into the real world, we need to treat our online responsibilities in a similar “humane” manner to that which we should expect from ourselves in person-to-person interactions.  The digital realm is seen by many as an anarchic wild west of sorts where one can say whatever they want without consequence and with anonymity, but as societies trend towards more online use and regulations and expectations increase, this anarchic stance becomes an increasing liability as employers, colleges, and others use online posts and interactions as part of their processes for hiring, admittance, etc.  To best counter that, we must embrace and teach responsible digital use (both in actual use/engagement and in time allotted for use) rather than treat it like the bane of our existence and encourage complete disconnection.
