social media safety Herb Christensen

hchristensen@cbcsd.org
I am not a social media fanatic.  I use some to retrieve photos of thing I am interested in related to history.  We were shown a book titled Philmont.  I love pictures related to the old west and thought the pioneer reference was fitting.  I was involved in one drive at Warm Springs.  Such warm feelings.

The social media post reminded me of the previous video of how a predator engages in "luring".  Small steps but so relentless, I suppose like any addiction.  Develope the similarities of your lives, make normal problems seem like mountains.  Make them seem permanent and believe that an unknown someone will make it all go away, "Just trust Me!"

The FBI site and Netsmartz hit home.

I attempted to download a timer through our filters and I got the timer just like the other coaches had.  I found that I had even more!   My timer took over my district computer.  I disconnected from the network and removed a battery to stop the typing going on.  Days later our techies advised me never to to that site again as it was in eastern Europe attempting to gain access to our facility.  I had not paid attention to the url close enough.

I just went through my settings on Meta.  I do not use it regularly but have in the last year since the passing of many long time friends and many relatives, begun to open posts from my personally known relatives.  Several will not be around to visit with.  I can only click on the open button in an email as I have no log in or account.  The account icon Meta shows is one I first attemped to use in 1997.

Meta trolls in an attempt to lure me in by wanting to send me a one click log in and not allowing me to see posts from my cousin or brother if I do not accept their policy.  I have missed many posts but will not re engage.

I get sucked in with some comic book or strip posts and want to repost.  Now if I get to see a post there is no repost button.

I have more examples of luring and theft that happened to some friends or relatives over the years.

I will advocate that each of us never click on a link in an email suggesting it is a bank or the IRS or other government agency.  Call them direct with the number you normally use.  Know that anyone asking for financial information should already have that information and if you get a call that grandma is in jail of a hospital and you are not to hang up, it is a big red flag telling you to hang up and phone a friend such as the hospital or the police.  Just as with any contact that wants or tells you not to tell anyone, immediately take a deep breath and talk to your trusted adult be it a school counselor/administrator/resource officer , or even a parent.   Anything on the internet is not private and has eternal life.
